India National Cricket Team bowling coach Morne Morkel talked about the team’s poor bowling performance on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test against the Australia National Cricket Team. He admitted that they didn’t execute plans and they need to get better between the overs 50-80.

India National Cricket Team had a long, tiring day on Day 2 of the ongoing third Test against Australia, which is held at the Gabba in Brisbane. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, it has looked like that team has travelled with some local net bowlers who don’t have any exposure.

India pacers struggle to get going as Australia pile up over 400 runs in the first innings

Keeping apart Jasprit Bumrah’s 5 wickets, India managed to take just 2 wickets in the entire day, which in itself is a cause of concern for the team. The premier pacer took his team off to a flying start with the ball as he removed both Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney early.

Following that, Nitish Kumar Reddy removed Marnus Labuschagne, and it seemed that others would chip in and take the game away from Australia. But it was the exact opposite of that as Travis Head (152) and Steve Smith (101) put pressure back on the bowlers with their innings.

India bowlers seemed to have no plans against Travis Head, who has been troubling them in the series. Only Jasprit Bumrah kept bowling tight while others delivered freebies as well and let the batter score runs quickly and frustrate the bowlers.

In the shadow of Travis Head, Steve Smith also benefitted as the batter returned to form and slammed a magical ton. The duo shared a 234-run partnership for the fourth wicket as India failed to take a single wicket in the second session of the day at The Gabba.

We need to get better at bowling 50-80 overs – Morne Morkel

Bowling coach Morne Morkel admitted that bowlers were right on the money in the first session. But after that, they weren’t up to the mark. He claimed that they have game plans for every batter, but they aren’t executing them. Speaking to reporters during the press conference, he explained:

“We need to get better at bowling 50-80 overs. In the first session, we bowled well; they put a partnership with the softness of the older ball. We have game plans, but are we executing? That’s something we have to discuss.”

We planned to little more over the wickets straight lines to Head – Morne Morkel

Morne Morkel also talked about the plans they had made for Travis Head. He claimed that they had planned to bowl a little more over the wickets straight lines and stressed that it’s up to individuals to back their strengths and work on plans.

Morne Morkel also stressed the need to discuss the different plans for Travis Head if the batter is scoring runs quickly. He added that they will be working on these things over the next couple of days. He elaborated:

“Our plan was to little more over the wickets straight lines to Head. Individual bowlers need to back their strengths. Margin is so small once he is in, it’s difficult. From over 50, we need to get better.

“That’s one thing we need to look at whether to persist with the plan despite Head hitting for runs or change up. That’s something we will discuss tonight and over the next couple of days.”
